extra probes in multispectral display

I'm working with MODIS 1 km data from hydra. I do a multispectral display and get two colored probes by default, cyan and magenta. I pull the top probes off the cyan and magenta and move them around the image and see that they have no numbers attached to them. Only the bottom two seem to "work" based upon the values shown in the multispectral channel selector in the layer controls

Do you automatically/always get these two extra probes with every multispectral display? I've done some testing but can not reproduce this.
