mask problems

Hi,
I fear that my McV session has gotten into some odd state. When I was trying to apply masks to H8 data, I would get ranges of missing to missing or 1 to 1. Now, I created a field, ran a mask that should work, but got a null pointer exception. Have I forgotten how to use mask or is something else going on?
What is odd, that for this error, after restart, there is not a problem. It is true, the "range" is None:
But, the range is None both before and after restart when the mask works again.
Could the two problems,interactive mask providing 1 to 1 or missing to missing ranges and the NPE, be related? If so, is there something I am doing to cause this?
