Satellite imagery not showing all gray levels.

Post by Rick »

I have a laptop (Lenovo running Windows 7) and noticed that many color levels of my satellite image were missing. I increased the number of colors for the laptop from 24 bit to 32 bit (check your computer display settings) and the satellite image showed all 8-bits of gray levels.

Also, note that the default "gray scale" color table has just 256 steps (or bins). If you are using this for data that contains more than 256 discrete values (for example, perhaps brightness temperatures), you might also see this effect as multiple data values are binned together into one of the 256 gray shades for the display.

You can create a new table that contains more than 256 levels which would help with this, if it is a problem.
