Thanks for your elucidation. Not sure whether one could just extract the first group (containing the rain rate I am interested in) with some netCDF tool/operator. How would it be done? Unfortunately, I am not much versed in netCDF manipulations.

I've tried a few different things with NcML but to this point I've been unsuccessful. I've posed this question to the IDV group (as they've helped us in the past with some NcML-related questions) and I'll let you know what I hear back.
