no cursor readout for data field

I have a netcdf file:

ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/incoming/test2.nc.gz

in which I am trying to look at pixel values at the cursor location using command-left click (on a mac). I see the lat/lon values at the cursor location, but no data values are appearing. This is very strange behavior that I have not seen before.

Hi Kris,

I found that the probe worked in some regions but not others. I have written up an inquiry for the bug:

has there been any progress on this? My colleagues and I really need to be able to probe data fields from AVHRR full orbit NetCDF files

Hi Kris-

Just wanted to let you know that I'm still looking into this. I've been trying some different ways of displaying the data. I've noticed that the Data Probe exhibits the same behavior as the middle mouse click. The Value Plot display plots real values over regions that the data probe doesn't.

Also, I've checked the IDV and that shows the same issues as -V.

I will continue looking into this tomorrow along with some other data types as we are trying to assess if this is a problem more with the data or with the projection/display.

Thanks, Jay

Hi Kris-

Continuing from my last post... I also confirmed that the Grid Table has values where the data probes are failing to display the values.

Today I tried an image display of a NOAA-19 GAC pass and observed the same behavior as your netCDF file. Large regions near the beginning and ends of the pass did not have data probe values. Interestingly, with this data displayed on a globe display, there where more areas that had probe values. I also tried a full disk GVAR image and could not get that to fail in any projection for what it's worth.

I've read some programmer comments about the issue being in visad and how the fields are displayed with java. I'll alert the programmer with this additional information and see what he says.

Thanks, Jay

Thank you very much for looking into this. Having the probe capability work in a reliable manner would be VERY beneficial to our research efforts here. Please continue to keep me in the loop with regards to the progress on this issue

Hi Ghansham and Kris,

I'm posting a sample file that showed probing problems here:

ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/incoming/NSS.GHRR.NF.D86013.S1022.E1207_NASA_LaRC_cloud_properties.nc

You can load this file through the General>Files/Directories chooser as a gridded data source and display it using any display type such as Image Display or Color-Shaded Plan View. We actually updated the visad.jar packaged with the McIDAS-V 1.8beta1 nightly this past week that fixed probing issues with several files like the one I posted on ftp. For example, the specific file I posted wouldn't probe over much of Northeastern Africa, The Middle East, and Europe in core McIDAS-V, but in my testing thus far it is working much better.

If either of you have any other files that don't probe correctly in the current (07/23) 1.8beta1 nightly, please let us know.

Thanks,
Bob Carp

Hi Ghansham,

I just put the file back on ftp, so the link from my last post should work for about a week when it'll be cleared out again.

Oddly enough, I was just about to respond to this post myself. A couple days ago we updated the visad.jar packaged with the 1.8beta1 nightly builds that fixed the probing problems with the file on ftp as well as a few others. If you load the file on ftp in 1.7u1 core you'll see that probing doesn't work over much of Africa and Europe. However, the probing should work well in today's (build date 10/17/2018) 1.8beta1 nightly. Note that we haven't fully tested this on all platforms yet.

If anyone notices any probing difficulties in the nightly, please let us know.

Thanks,
Bob
