Put menus on both McV windows, or make McV a single-window.

Post by mug_admin »

On November 17th, a McIDAS-V Brainstorming session was held for all scientists at SSEC and CIMSS. At the session, one basic question was asked of the users: What would you like to see in McIDAS-V?

The following discussion is from that brainstorming session:

Add option to put menus on both McV windows, or make McV a single-window program (TomW)

* TomW said that as a user of both McV and IDV, he finds it annoying that the McV doesn't have the menus on both of its windows (it has them on the main window, but not the Data Explorer window).
* BeckyS said that we could think about adding a user preference that lets the user decide if they want the menus on both windows.
* DaveP said he doesn't remember the details, but he thinks there was a good reason for us removing the menus from the Data Explorer window. And it's possible that the same issue may mean that we should not add a user preference (i.e, do not allow the user to request the menus on both windows; allow them only on the main window).
* There aren't a lot of modern applications that use two windows - many use multiple tabs rather than multiple windows.
* JonB and others suggested that we could look into making McV a single-window application where the Data Explorer is in one tab and the data display(s) are in the other tabs. RickK added that if people prefer separate windows we could have it where the Data Explorer tab could be detachable (launched into a separate window).
