Make it easier to add on to image loops

Post by mug_admin »

On November 17th, a McIDAS-V Brainstorming session was held for all scientists at SSEC and CIMSS. At the session, one basic question was asked of the users: What would you like to see in McIDAS-V?

The following discussion is from that brainstorming session:

Make it easier to add on to image loops (ScottL)

* ScottL said that he needs to update a loop displaying GRIB data about once per month. He wants to be able to easily restore the previous loop and just add on the new data, but he finds that he has to remake the entire loop every time.
* BillH said that scripting is the best way to handle it TomW agreed, and the two of them emphasized that lots of scripting examples are needed. TomW also mentioned that there are some good ones in the McV Forums Tips&Tricks section.
* TomR added that we need to get rid of ISL completely, including doc and other references. TomW agreed and said that Jython/Python is the way to go, adding that it's also the scripting language for AWIPS.
* Rick commented that ScottL could "cat" the grib files together.

Scott Lindstrom has a directory full of grib2 files, and he wants to save a
bundle that loads all of the files in that directory. The number of files in
that directory changes, but he wants the bundle to always grab all of the files
in that directory.

On Windows, I was able to go to General->Files/Directories, and double-click my
grib directory. Look In: now said grib and my grib files were listed. Without
selecting anything else, the file name was listed as V:\beckys\mcv-data\grib
and the file pattern was listed as .* and I was able to click Add Source. My
data loaded correctly and I saved it as a bundle. I went back and added a new
grib file to my directory, loaded the bundle, and it found the new data file
without any trouble.

This is currently not working on Mac, but has been written up in inquiry #923.
