Viewing Full Disk Images

Post by TJS »

McIDAS-V seems to have strange 'edges' when viewing a full disk image. This seems to be the case with both current GOES imagery and simulated ABI imagery. See attached images.

Is there some switch I should be invoking?

Thanks,
TJS

Dear TJS,

You need to use the 'high' (texture) quality slider under 'layer controls' in the 'data viewer'. See attached images.

As a request, could this control/slider somehow be more 'visible'? Maybe an option as well in the display window.

Tim,

I've been testing an alternate rendering procedure that doesn't produce this
artifact. It will display the space pixel values however, so we'd have to
decide the best way to handle that. For example, in the infrared channels
there seem to be some trailing or lagging radiation measuments making the
edge look fuzzy - maybe that's the atm limb?

True that the earth edge isn't a one pixel "knife-edge" transition. See attached image.

Would this help with 'filling in' the dateline? See attached. Thanks.

There is a work-around I found by accident to get rid of the dateline by using the mesh option.... In the Layer Controls tab of the Data Explorer window, there is a pull-down menu for Mode: - choose Mesh and the dateline disappears.

I was wondering what Mat did when he selected Mode "Mesh." In the help for that feature, I find out that I can select the way the texture is displayed (Solid, Mesh, or Points) but I am still not sure what that actually means for the structure of the underlying data. Could a more detailed explanation be added? It may also help to have an external link to a java applet or FLANIS applet that shows the user what happens to the data as the mode changed. This would also be a useful introduction for things like texture quality, choosing display modes and various other features.

Thanks!

Joleen,

Below are some examples of Solid, Mesh, and Point all zoomed WAY in. I was wrong that mesh solved all of our problems - if zoomed out enough, you don't see the dateline in mesh. But zoomed in some you will see it. Blow it is zoomed in super far. I can't tell you what zoom factor I used, because I don't see where to find that.

I should also state that to even get this dataset onto my PC with McV I had to use the "every other point" option.

Tim or McV support:

I've been trying to look at some archived GOES-13 stray light images in McIDAS-V and the space look keeps getting masked out. Have you found a way to "unmask" space? I'm here on the forum because I searched "space look" and this seemed to be the only post that.

Thanks,

Hi Brian-

At least time we don't know of a way to view space as real data. There is some development in this area at this time, and I've written up your request as well for further evaluation: http://mcidas.ssec.wisc.edu/inquiry-v/?inquiry=745 Let us know if you have any further comments.

Thanks, Jay
