adding equilibrium level to derived data from 3-D NWP grids

Post by kbedka1 »

It would be helpful to have some functionality embedded within Mc-V to provide the user the option of deriving convective instability parameters from 3-D gridded numerical model fields. In many cases, the parameters Convective Available Potential Energy, Convective Inhibition, and Lifted Index are provided as 2-D data fields and are not necessarily derived by Mc-V from the Temp/Spec Humidity/Pressure profiles. Specifically I am interested in visualizing the temperature where a unstable, rising parcel is no longer warmer than its environment. This is referred to as the Equilibrium Level or the Level of Neutral Buoyancy. McIDAS-X has code to compute this field and it would be great to see this integrated into McIDAS-V

Hi Kris,

McIDAS-X can derive these parameters from sounding data, but not gridded data. I have added Inquiry 1894 requesting that this capability be added to McIDAS-V.
