Hi,
After speaking with Bob about this issue, I plotted each numerical McX level of turbulence in McV. As I understand it,
0: Neg
1: ? Possibly Neg-LGT
2: LGT
3: LGT-MDT
4: MDT
5: MDT-SEV
6: SEV
7: SEV-EXTREME
8: EXTREME
Some of these symbols are great. Is there a way to adjust or add symbols for these levels within the layout model editor. I would like the symbols to match with
http://maps.avnwx.com/help/icons.html#PIREPs (without the bubble, just the symbol)
or

Thanks,
Joleen
Changing Turbulence Report Symbols/Layout Model
Re: Changing Turbulence Report Symbols/Layout Model
Hi Joleen -
Thanks for the request. The image does a good job showing how the severe-extreme and extreme shapes don't conform to the general standard. I wrote up McIDAS-V inquiry #1456 to cover this feature request.

Re: Changing Turbulence Report Symbols/Layout Model
These symbols were included in the special "wmo" Hershey Font developed for VisAD which closely followed the GEMPAK code at the time. Since these are "stroke-generated" symbols, the associated Hershey Font can be edited to change the symbols for the 9 items -- it would be more difficult to add more, however, since this font contains many symbols related to meteorology and programs just index into the font to get the desired symbol drawn.
Re: Changing Turbulence Report Symbols/Layout Model
The attached image shows the proposed modified symbols for turbulence (outlined in green) for decoded values of 0-8. All except one of the (7) is taken from AWC -- they do not have a symbol for "severe-extreme", but since it is reported and decoded, we have included a symbol here to indicate this condition.
After comments and due consideration, we will update the VisAD library with this font so it can be included in the McIDAS-V.

Re: Changing Turbulence Report Symbols/Layout Model
After evaluation, consistency with the symbol set used at the Aviation Weather Center was important. When reports of SEV-EXT are encountered (decoded to 7 in the McIDAS-X MD file), the symbol plotted will be for an extreme report. Since the uniqueness of the report is maintained in the MD file, it will still be possible, if necessary, to determine which reports are SEV-EXT or EXT either through filters in the point display or applying an appropriate color table.
