Trying to apply an MB enhancement curve

Post by tim_v »

***************************************
EDIT: After writing the post below, I stumbled across a curve called "colormb" under Color Table > GEMPAK > Group1, so this probably solves the problem below. Thanks!
***************************************

I was looking to apply the old-fashioned MB enhancement curve to one of my GOES IR AREA images, since it's a relatively standardized method for displaying anvil temperatures (see below).

I found that surprisingly it's in none of the Color Tables or even in the Color Tables add-ons. So I went into the Color Tables hoping to just make one from scratch, and found that all the color settings are brightness (0-255) based, with no way to calibrate by temperature.

I assume that either I'm missing a setting or the AREA image is not supplying temperature information.

My question is:
1. Is there an MB enhancement curve out there anywhere? If not,
2. Is there an -easy- way to adjust Color Tables by temperature? If not,
3. Is there a definition of the MB enhancement curve by input 0-255 brightness?

I'm not really sure how to go about trying to accomplish this.

I'm not able to get a readout of temperature information at the mouse location, either (I'm not even sure how to enable it) so again I'm puzzled whether this is a McIDAS-V issue or an AREA image issue.

Hi Tim,
Not sure if it will help, but I found an old McIDAS-X enhancement file named MBX.ET that I *think* has the correct settings for the NOAA/NESDIS black and white MB enhancement. I said "think" because it's something that was just laying around - I haven't used it for years. But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have named it MBX.ET unless it was the MB enhancement...

The file is attached, so you can grab it and give it a try. According to the McIDAS-X command "EU TAB MBX",
here are the brightness settings for the enhancement:

Brightness Blue Green Red
min max min max min max min max
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
0 59 0 0 0 0 0 0
60 79 8 40 8 40 8 40
80 103 52 91 52 91 52 91
104 175 96 164 96 164 96 164
176 187 112 112 112 112 112 112
188 199 156 156 156 156 156 156
200 203 72 72 72 72 72 72
204 207 0 0 0 0 0 0
208 227 40 248 40 248 40 248
228 255 255 255 255 255 255 255

I'll try to check into this a bit more tomorrow and let you know if I find out anything useful.

Thanks,
barryr

I think it would be great if mc-v supplied a host of pre-existing enhancements.

Thanks.

Hi Tim,
You're right - it would be useful for the core McIDAS-V package to include as many useful pre-existing image enhancements (color tables) as possible. I'm told that it is a topic (along with other data files) that will be addressed. (It hasn't been yet because we're still in the heavy development/fix stage).

For now, if a user has a set of color tables they'd like to make available to other users, creating a plugin might be an option (though plugins, too, are a work in progress). See http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/mcidas/doc/mcv ... ugins.html and its following pages for more info about plugins and creating them.

Here is the MB.ET from NESDIS converted into a McV XML...

(Grrr, can't upload an XML file to this board)

Hi tsavos,
Sorry, we should have configured the board to allow attachments with the extension .xml. We went ahead and made the change so it should work in the future.

As a test, I grabbed your mb.xml from the ftp server and attached it. Thanks for submitting it!
