McIDAS-V (1.7?)

Post by Bernie Connell »

When will the next update of McIDAS-V (1.7?) be released?
Will it include local server access to GRB and CMI GOES-16 files?

Hi Bernie -

We are hoping to release McIDAS-V 1.7 by the end of the year, pending our findings in system testing.

As for local servers, the McIDAS-X 2017.2 version of the ABI servers will be available on OS X and Linux. From the McIDAS-X User's Guide (DSSERVE), here is the documentation for what will be supported through the local server:

You can access GOES-R Series (GOES-16 and later) netCDF image files with the IMG* commands by using DSSERVE to assign a dataset name to the files. When doing so, specify "ABIN" in the format parameter, TYPE=IMAGE, and the directory and file masks in the DIRFILE keyword. The files must be mission-standard Level 1b files in netCDF-4 format (like those from NOAA CLASS or decoded from the GRB data stream using CSPP Geo) or mission-standard Level 2+ products in netCDF-4 format (like those from NOAA CLASS). The names of files should look similar to ABI-L1b-RadC-M3C01_G16_s2015229195720.nc (current CSPP Geo naming convention) or OR_ABI-L1b-RadC-M4C16_G16_s20151702215532_e20151702220362_c20151702220394.nc (GOES-R Ground System naming convention).

While local servers won't be updated on Windows, users on Windows machines will still be able to access remote ABI servers, including those from SSEC Satellite Data Services, and the freely available datasets from Unidata on the lead.unidata.ucar.edu. This lead.unidata.ucar.edu will be included in the list of default Satellite>Imagery servers in the McIDAS-V 1.7 release.

Note that the CMI files are not supported by the local servers. However, they can be loaded into McIDAS-V through the General>Files/Directories chooser using the "Grid files (netCDF/GRIB/OPeNDAP/GEMPAK)" data type.

Also, for this release of McIDAS-V, there will be a plugin available to download for plotting GLM data. In McIDAS-V 1.7, there won't be ADDE access to GLM data, but with the plugin you can plot loops of local GLM netCDF files. If you are interested in plotting GLM data in McIDAS-V and want more information about this, please let me know.

Thanks -
