no plot of volcano positions

Post by hproe »

Hi -

It is for some time I have not plotted volcano positions with Display > Plot Location Labels > Earth > Volcanos. With a recent nightly nothing is plotted and no error report is given. Checking other items under Earth plotting is nil as well, but there are error reports given. Can you reproduce this behaviour. If yes, can this links be re-established?

thanks, HP

Hi HP -

Thanks for pointing this out. Yesterday, I replicated the errors you reported. Many of these location labels (including volcano positions) point to Unidata URLs that begin with http. It looks like they are making a transition to https, which caused several of the URLs to break. I wrote this up as McIDAS-V Inquiry 2610.

Worth noting is that I checked these again this morning and Volcanos, as well as others that were breaking yesterday (including Glaciers) are working as well. It is possible that they reverted back to http since things were breaking in the IDV as well. I'll leave Inquiry 2610 open though so we can investigate ways to better handle these transitions in the future.

On the chance that Unidata continues this transition to https, we get the URLs for the location labels from a file called places.xml (which comes from the IDV). In the places.xml file, you can find the individual URLs for each item. For example, Volcanos has a URL of: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/georesource ... lcanos.kmz. Yesterday, I was able to get this URL working through the General>URLs chooser by choosing "Locations" as the Data Type and changing the url to begin with https.

Thanks again for reporting this -

Hi Bob -

Thanks for the exhaustive information. Let's hope that things get stable again. I am not sure whether I should find places.xml in the McIdas or IDV directories. In any case, I have not found a file of this name on my notebook.

In the meantime I have found a similar file at Google Earth Lessons:
www.gelessons.com/kmzfiles/gvp_layer.kmz
The drawback or advantage (according to what you want) is that it is fine-structured and you have to know a bit of geography at times in order to hit the desired volcano. E.g. Agung is found under Indonesia > Lesser Sunda Islands.

Hi HP -

You can pass the "http://www.gelessons.com/kmzfiles/gvp_layer.kmz" through the General>URLs chooser and get all of the locations to plot using the "Locations" Data Type (from the dropdown menu in the chooser). If you load it as a "Google Earth" file you end up in the Field Selector where you have to individually select the volcano you are interested in, as you mentioned in your post. Once the display is created, if you see horizontal lines going across the screen, go to Edit>Properties for the layer and enable Fast Rendering. This may or may not be an issue dependent on the projection and zoom level of the display.

In my last post, I linked to the IDV GitHub page which includes the text of the places.xml file. As an alternative to looking on GitHub, the actual file is packaged in idv.jar. If you unpackage idv.jar, you'll find it in /ucar/unidata/idv/resource/stations/places.xml.

If you have any other questions about this, please let me know.

Thanks -
Bob
