GFS data catalogues do not load

Post by hproe »

HI -

It is now roughly a week that I cannot load catalogues holding GFS data through Gridded Data / Remote. I have unsuccessfully tried several of them, e.g.
http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/mcidas/softwar ... Models.xml

Have I missed something here?

Hi HP -

Sorry that you are having problems with GFS data. Unfortunately, I'm having a difficult time replicating the problem. Using the catalog you referenced, I was able to load/display a field from everything under Realtime Data -> NCEP Model Data -> GFS Forecast System (GFS). I also quick-tested some ensemble data (under the Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS) directory) and this worked as well. Can you please point me to a specific example that you are having trouble working with? For example, I generally use the "Latest Collection" of the dataset I want to work with.

Here are a few other questions:
  1. What is the specific error you are seeing?
  2. Are you seeing the error at Add Source in the Data Sources tab of the Data Explorer, or further along in the process of displaying the data?
  3. Are you only seeing this problem with GFS, or other models as well?

Thanks -

Hi Bob -
Here the answers to your requests:

1. Error: Could not load url: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/mcidas/softwar ... Models.xml
2. I get the above error immediatley after having inserted the address of the catalogue, i.e. before I hit Add Source. Actually, the misbehaviour occurs also with bundles that have run flawlessly before.
3. Looks like I get the error with any catalogue.

I seem to remember that Ihave had the same symptom months ago, but it went away after a couple od days.

Hi HP -

Thanks for answering my questions. Here are a some other questions/things to try:

  1. Through the General -> Catalogs chooser, are you able to use the http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/mcidas/software/v/catalog.xml catalog?
  2. To verify that there's nothing going on with SSEC URL catalogs with external users, can you try the http://weather.rsmas.miami.edu/thredds/catalog.xml catalog?
  3. To see if something in your McIDAS-V setup has caused the issue, can you try starting up McV with "runMcV.bat -tempuserpath" and try accessing the GFS catalog data?
  4. If #3 above doesn't work, do you know if there may have been any changes to the firewalls on your computer? THREDDS uses port 8080 in McV (as noted on the System Requirements page in the User's Guide), so making sure this port is open would be good.
  5. Something else in McV that uses THREDDS is the Radar -> Level II -> Remote chooser. Are you able to display remote Level 2 radar data?

Thanks again -

Hi Bob -

Again here the answers to your 4 new points:

1. Same error message as before. In addition I note now that after below 'Catalog' and 'History' and after 'Browse' the message 'Unknown Cataslog Type' gets printed.
2. This catalog shows the same error messages as the wisc one.
3. Problem persists.
4. I have explicitely opened 8080 and, to be sure, also tested with firewall de-activated - problem presists.
5. Cannot access either

When running my bundles (use the ucar thredds), I get the following error right at the start:
Error reading catalog:http://thredds.ucar.edu/thredds/catalog/grib/NCEP/GFS/Global_0p25deg/latest.xml
java.io.IOException: Could not load resource:http://thredds.ucar.edu/thredds/catalog/grib/NCEP/GFS/Global_0p25deg/latest.xml
error:java.net.SocketException: Address family not
supported by protocol family: connect

And remember, I am running under Windows 10.

really strange, HP

Hi HP -

Thanks again for the answers. I went on our Windows 10 test machine and I was able to display GFS 0.25deg global data in both McV 1.6 and today's nightly.

You mentioned this problem came up a couple weeks ago in the nightly. By chance, do you still have McV 1.6 installed on your machine? If so, can you access THREDDS data sources there?

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but doing a Google search of the "error:java.net.SocketException: Address family notsupported by protocol family: connect" error shows that a lot of people have been able to resolve the problem by removing a program on their machine called RelevantKnowledge. From a website shouldiremoveit.com "RelevantKnowledge has been found to be bundled with 3rd party software. If you have not purposefully installed this, you should be safe uninstalling it.".

Thanks for your patience with this -

Hi Bob -

That was ot a shot in the dark - it's bull's eye! 'RelevantKnowledge' was the culprit. It got installed on 13 April (inadvertently by me, the only user). No other software was installed in these days, so it remains somewhat a mystery. Anyway, it's removed now. Many thanks for bearing with me.

cheers, HP
