McIDAS-V quits during start-up

Hi -

I have upgraded my 2 notebooks to Windows 10. On the primary one (NVIDIA GeForce GT 745M and Intel HD Graphics 4600) McIDAS-V is working perfectly. On my older back-up one (Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset - WDDM1.1) McIDAS-V quits during start-up with the following log:

The display adapter is up-to-date. IDV5.2 is working fine. Any idea what is going on here?

I don't have experience using McIDAS-V on Windows 10, but here are some observations/questions/things to test:

1. We have seen our best results in the past with NVIDIA graphics drivers, and we have seen problems with a couple different Intel graphics chipsets, but not specifically the one you mentioned. Before upgrading to Windows 10, were you able to run McIDAS-V on both of these machines? If so, what version of Windows were you on prior to the upgrade? Windows 7?

2. I know that there are several differences between the IDV version 5.2 and McIDAS-V 1.5. These changes include updated java and netcdf versions. The java/netcdf versions in our 1.6beta1 nightly are more up-to-date with what the IDV 5.2 has. If you haven't already, can you give the nightly build a try and see if this helps?

3. We have seen this error in the past when users were installing on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. We first told users to update their drivers. If this didn't solve the problem, we noted that some graphics cards do not have 64-bit drivers and thus will not be able to support the 64-bit installers. Because of this, we suggested users attempt downloading the 32-bit Windows installer instead of the 64-bit installer. If you are using the 64-bit installer, can you try the 32-bit installer and see if this helps?

Answering your points:

1.Yes, McIDAS-V has been running on both machines before the upgrade, on the back-up under Windows 7 and on the primary under 8.1.

2. The nightly build gives the same error.

3. In the meantime I have seen the recommendation in the FAQ list, to try the 32-bit version. Issues same error.

Thanks for the information. Can you try setting your log level to TRACE and try starting up McIDAS-V? This could possibly give us some helpful information. Even though you can't get McIDAS-V to start up, you can try setting the log level using the configuration GUI. From a command prompt, cd to your McIDAS-V-System directory and run:

runMcV-Config.bat

This should pop up the Advanced tab of the User Preferences window. Set the log level to TRACE and hit OK. Now, try starting up McIDAS-V and please send us your mcidasv.log output. If you are unable to open the configuration GUI, please let us know.

Without a Windows 10 machine over here to test with, it's hard to figure out what might be going on. In looking at today's McIDAS-V 1.6beta1 nightly, one thing that jumps out to me is that the IDV hasn't been updated since 06/19/2015 (version 5.1u3). IDV 5.2 is dated 08/26/2015, so it is possible that one of the IDV code changes between 06/19 and 08/26 might have helped out with this problem. Can you please run the following test:

1. Download today's McIDAS-V 1.6beta1 nightly
2. cd to your McIDAS-V-System directory and rename idv.jar to idv_current.jar
3. cd to your IDV_5.2 directory, copy the idv.jar to the McIDAS-V-System directory
4. Try starting McIDAS-V

This should start up McIDAS-V using the idv.jar from the current IDV release. Please let me know if this works.

Sorry that you are still having issues, and thanks for your patience. I did some online research and found a support request for someone who was having trouble running a computer game called Minecraft after updating from Windows 7 to Windows 10 that was related to graphics issues. There was a reply from Microsoft support suggesting how to install a Windows 7 driver in compatibility mode for Windows 10. Would you be willing to give this suggestion a try? Here is the support request.

A programmer mentioned to me that Minecraft and McIDAS-V both use Java for their 3D displays, so any graphics advice for Minecraft is likely to apply to McIDAS-V. However, we don't have any experience installing Windows 7 drivers on a Windows 10 machine, so we can't offer any insight on doing this.
