point data ADDE access?

Post by kbedka1 »

I have a point data ADDE server which I typically use commands like PTLIST and PTDISP to display the data in McIDAS-X in real-time. My files are actually point NetCDF files, but the ADDE server has a configuration file which makes them behave like MD files. I've created this remote ADDE server in Mc-V, but in the Data Explorer window, I cannot figure out how to access this data. On the left side, I see ways to display remote imagery via ADDE, but remote Gridded Data and Point sounding data points to URL's. How can one access the MD-like data remotely in Mc-V? Seems like something Mc-V should be able to do.

Kris -- I'm not sure what you are (not) seeing. In the attached screen-shot, I have ADDE servers being used for Point data...?

Hi Kris-

I tried some of our -X testing examples for the netCDF adde server and set them up remotely. When trying to access the datasets I'm getting errors like "DAY/TIME select clauses parameters nonexistent" and then "Point data server unable to resolve this dataset: JAY/null"

In -X, the netCDF point adde server has some limitations (especially with PTLIST) because it doesn't have the concept of a schema and a MD 'record.' You can't just PTLIST a record, you need to use PARAM= with a specific list of parameters for it to give some data back. With the -V ADDE point chooser, the problems with the netCDF adde server are moreso because it won't know how to resolve a time list of data available.

Also, the ADDE point chooser in -V is limited in the number of schema it can recognize. This has been written up in a couple different inquiries:
http://mcidas.ssec.wisc.edu/inquiry-v/?inquiry=940 (any schema)
http://mcidas.ssec.wisc.edu/inquiry-v/?inquiry=457 (GRET ARET satellite retrievals)
http://mcidas.ssec.wisc.edu/inquiry-v/?inquiry=424 (CLDS schema)

I have written up a new inquiry for your request because as we move forward we may want to serve netCDF files through adde in a different manner which may not fall under the schema type architecture:
http://mcidas.ssec.wisc.edu/inquiry-v/?inquiry=1525

If you have any more questions or comments, just let us know.

Thanks, Jay

OK, I figured that this nontraditional NetCDF point data would be challenging. If I load the data locally via the General -> Files/Directories, it can display fine. If I had 20 files on my local machine, is there a way to pull them all together into an animation without having to display each one individually?

Hi Kris-

This is the process we used with metar netCDF files for our training tutorials:

- In the General Files chooser, highlight all the files you want to display (control + left-click), click Add Source
- Select Point Data under Fields
- Choose a layout model and Create Display
- Then in our example we'd adjust the Time Animation (in the Define Animation Times) since it would make a time step for every minute over 6 hours of data.

Hopefully this process would be useful for your type of data. If you have any questions or would like some extra detail, let us know.

Thanks, Jay
